-what came before-He expected the footsteps any moment now. First the door would open a crack, letting a sliver of golden light shoot across the floor. Then the door would swing all the way open, the hand guiding it as smoothly as possible, but the rusty bolts would scream away despite the careful movements. The wide open door would flood the dark room with light but for a second, until the body guiding the hand cast its shadow over the bare floor and the paper strewn there. The feet would step lightly over the threshold, the hand pushing the door shut quickly, as if in admonishment of its betraying her presence.-what came before-
